American elm (Ulmus americana) is very common in the United States and Canada. In other parts of the world, European mountain elm and Japanese elm are more widely found.
The sapwood of American elm goes from white to grey but the heartwood is decidedly more well-defined, with shades ranging from pink to dark brown. The colour can vary according to the surface treatment and exposure to the light.
