Doussie is the commercial name of wood which is obtained from trees which grow throughout western Africa and, more precisely: Ayan, aligna, apa in Nigeria; Azzodau, linguè in the Ivory Coast; Bolengu, sifu sifu in Congo; Uvala in Angola; M’banga doussiè in Cameroon; Mumangala in Gabon and Papao in Ghana.
Although rather difficult to work due to its hardness, interlocked grain and silica deposits, it is a good wood that produces an excellent finish. Due to high resistance and durability, it is used for outdoor constructions like bridges and docks as it does not come under attack by shipworms. It is also used in joinery to build furniture, panels, stairs, floorboards, etc. It is widely used for the tracks of velodromes.
