The sapwood and heartwood of the European cherry tree are slightly different. The sapwood is narrow and yellow while the heartwood is pinkish brown which darkens significantly with seasoning and ageing. Quarter sawn cherry wood has a beautiful sheen with medullary rays similar to those of maple. The grain is straight and the texture medium. As a general rule, it polishes up very well, producing a beautiful silky, glossy finish.
Cherry is used in superior cabinet-making. The American variety, Prunus serotina Ehrh., also called black cherry due to its beautiful, dark and intense colour, is particularly sought after and is used to make musical instruments and pipes and in ship building. It is in great demand for crafting quality cabinetry. It is also widely used in the furniture industry.
