There is a distinct difference in colour between walnut sapwood and heartwood. The sapwood is whitish, while the heartwood is grey-brown with darker veins which, especially in the bottom part of the trunk, create different patterns, once highly prized by furniture makers. On the whole, the wood is easy to work and polishes and finishes beautifully. It is durable but, if placed in a damp environment, it can easily fall victim to plant and animal parasites. The wood is relatively hard but not too pliant. It dries very well without too much danger of cracking or twisting.
Thanks to its easy workability and beautiful structure, walnut is always sought after by furniture makers and furnishers. Beautiful veneers can be obtained from the wood, especially from the bottom part of the trunk (the stump) and its roots.
