Walnut

There is a distinct difference in colour between walnut sapwood and heartwood. The sapwood is whitish, while the heartwood is grey-brown with darker veins which, especially in the bottom part of the trunk, create different patterns, once highly prized by furniture makers. On the whole, the wood is easy to work and polishes and finishes beautifully. It is durable but, if placed in a damp environment, it can easily fall victim to plant and animal parasites. The wood is relatively hard but not too pliant. It dries very well without too much danger of cracking or twisting.
